Here's How Singers Over 40 are Gaining Vocal Power, Tone and Range Without Strain or Singing Out of Key
A step-by-step, low-tension method that takes you from your very first notes to singing songs with confidence — designed specifically for voices that have changed with age.
Bill McGowan
Ian helped me understand why my voice was breaking and taught me the techniques to navigate those transitions smoothly. Thanks to his guidance, I can now hit high notes I once thought were impossible, and my confidence and skill have grown tremendously. I'm truly grateful for everything I've learned.
Does This Sound Like You?
✅ You’re over 40, and high notes feel like a strain — or they crack, flip, or disappear altogether.
✅ Your throat gets tight and your voice tires quickly. Singing feels like a fight instead of a joy.
✅ You’ve tried YouTube videos or the odd lesson, but you’re still not sure what to practise or in what order.
✅ You’re capable and confident in the rest of your life — so it’s frustrating that singing still makes you feel like a beginner.
✅ You’d love to sing with confidence at an open mic, in your choir, at a family gathering, or just for the grandkids — without worrying your voice will let you down.
If you nodded at even one of these, you’re not alone, and there’s nothing wrong with your voice. It just hasn’t been shown a better way to work.
How I Went From Straining Beginner to Finally Singing With Confidence, Power and Ease
I was standing backstage, wondering if my voice would get through the next song.
Singing shouldn’t feel this hard, I thought.
When the high note came, I did what I’d always done. I pushed harder. I choked, and my voice gave out.
Walking off stage that night, I knew something was seriously wrong with the way I was singing. How could I audition for another show, or say yes to a concert, knowing it could happen again?
Like most beginners, I’d spent years copying the singers I admired.
I used more air, more volume, more force — thinking that’s what “good singing” was. All it really did was build tension in my throat. I could hit some high notes, but they always came with strain and fatigue.
Even lessons didn’t fix it. The harder I tried, the worse it got, until I was avoiding high songs completely.
Why does singing feel like a fight for me, when other singers make it look so easy?
That question changed everything. I started studying vocal technique, determined to find what I was missing, and what I found shocked me.
The best singers weren’t using more force at all. They were using coordination. They were singing with release. Techniques that had been around for centuries, that no one had ever taught me.
Singing higher wasn’t about pushing harder. It was about letting go of the tension holding my voice down.
It wasn’t an overnight fix. There were days I wondered if my voice was broken, or if I just wasn’t meant to sing. But slowly, as I unlearned old habits and rebuilt my coordination, my voice began to change.
The strain faded. The cracks smoothed out. My high notes started to feel free.
Those same methods went on to carry me through a professional career. From auditions to stages and full shows, knowing my voice would last to the final note.
For the last 25 years, I’ve been teaching singers the same coordination-based approach that changed everything for me.
You don’t need to spend years figuring this out the hard way like I did. That’s exactly what I’ll guide you through in The Beginner Singer Blueprint.

Why Older Singers Find Freedom With This Simple, Low-Tension Approach
After 30 years singing professionally, 25 years teaching, and coaching hundreds of private students, I’ve stripped singing back to what really matters — the techniques and exercises that help you sing higher and release tension, without years of trial and error.
Here’s why it works…

Ian was a huge help to me as I was preparing to sing a soprano solo in the Messiah for the first time. My high notes were tight and the transitions between my high and low registers were choppy. Ian was patient and insightful, making useful suggestions for exercises and techniques to loosen up my voice. When the time came for me to sing the solo, I was relaxed and confident. The sound flowed from me to the audience in a way that had never happened in rehearsal. Several friends told me later that the solo was stunning! I would never have made that much progress without Ian's guidance.

Bass players are usually ignored, and in 20 years of active gigging, I had rarely received much attention for my vocals. After using Ian’s exercises for about 12 months, I booked a four-pack of lessons, and his guidance and encouragement helped me make practical adjustments that improved my tone, pitch, and confidence. Now, when chatting with people after gigs, I occasionally get complimented on my vocal performance, something that never really happened before. Thanks Ian!!!

What Blueprint Students Are Saying
Simon
The course is excellent — I practise every day, and I'm getting better with the higher notes, which is exactly what I wanted. The resonance exercises really help: learning to send the sound through the nasopharynx and my mouth with the "ng" sounds was something I really loved. It has improved my singing enormously.
Phil
Thanks for your Beginner Blueprint course. I really enjoyed it and practice the exercises regularly. It has given me more confidence when singing with my choir and folk groups.

“Six months later, I have range I didn’t know I possessed.”
Michael Myerscough - Private Student
I came to Ian carrying twenty years of evidence that I simply couldn't sing. My voice was thin, unpredictable, and I'd long since made peace with the idea that some people just aren't built for it. I'm not an easy student, singing is exposing in a way that makes me genuinely uncomfortable, and I don't respond well to feeling incompetent. I nearly didn't show up for the first session.
Six months later, I have range I didn't know I possessed. What actually convinced me something had changed wasn't a dramatic lesson moment, it was singing along at home one evening and suddenly realising it felt easy. That I wasn't bracing for my voice to crack. That I didn't hate the sound coming out of me. That's a quietly extraordinary thing to experience after decades of the opposite.
Ian is affirming without being vague. He's specific about what's going wrong and precise about how to fix it, which is exactly what I need. His exercises are well-targeted, he works with music I actually want to sing, and he has the good sense to not make the process feel like homework. The fact that he can genuinely sing himself and has performed matters too. I look forward to lessons now. I didn't think I'd ever write that sentence.

I am a novice singer-songwriter with no formal musical training. I have been wanting to improve my singing abilities to make my own songs sound more professional. I came upon the 'Aussie Vocal Coach' on YouTube and many of the exercises seemed to touch upon areas where I was struggling.
Eventually, I connected with Ian for some personal lessons. He is wonderful to work with and gave me the boost I needed. Ian’s intuitive observations helped improve my tone, range, and resonance, while also helping my phrasing to present a more polished and connected performance.
