Update 17/05/2012
Hi Everyone. Due to my wife giving birth to our first child in the next two weeks I am closing the comment section temporarily until we settle into parenthood. In the meantime I will be catching up with all of the comments that I haven’t answered yet. Enjoy all of the free stuff on the website and I will get back to answering questions soon. Ian

Hi Ian, I am Miguel Gonzalez from MEXICO, first of all congratulations for your website and all the material published, it’s really good. I recently start taking the 10 days mini-course and after 3 days, I can notice a big difference in my voice. I usually have a very bad time dealing with high notes, but now mixing the chest and head voice (learned from the exercises of the mini-course) I was able to have a very nice improvement, but my issue now, it’s that I took the initiative to record my voice singing my favorite song and I was very disappointed with the recording, it sounds very different of what I hear while singing, I am aware and clearly understand the voice “conduction” theory and all the physics but the fact of the matter is that I didn’t like my singing voice and this was a very bad hit to my self-esteem, although I really enjoy singing, I am seriously thinking about to quit. Based in your professional experience, Does the good singer born with this quality or develop the quality? What do you suggest me to overcome this situation? Thanks a lot.
- Miguel
Hi Ian I am a 17 year old lad that plays the guitar and have recently developed in interest in my ability to sing.
I was born with a cleft lip and pallete(this affects the shape of the lips, roof of the mouth and nose in my case) and just wondered whether this would had a negative impact on my singing and if there was anyway to overcome this.
Surgery is booked for this September wish me luck!
Many thanks, Tom
MY MAIN ISSUE ITS TO FIND MY OWN VOCAL RANGE WHERE MY VOCALS WILL SOUND BETTER ,THE BEST KEY FOR ME TO SING
THAT WILL BE A GOOD VIDEO
Can i ask how to sing with higher notes without shouting?!
because I want to sing with higher notes sometimes!?
THANK YOU!
Hello Ian,
I’m Wan from Malaysia.
I just want to ask about the facts that many professional vocal coach or singer argue about.
It is about “Do not imitate the singer when singing his/her song”
But i’m not sure about this facts.
What does it means actually??
Does it mean to not imitate the sound, melody, or the voice of the original singer??
OR
Do not try to catch up the level of the pitch from the original singer?? Because every singer and their own song provide different pitches and note.
I really confuse and give me a headache when it comes to this question.
Not only that, but it also make my daily singing practice are not in properly way.
So i hope, you can teach me or advise me how to sing in first place.
I know it kinds of basic, but, one step wrong then my voice is done.
Thank you
Hey Ian, firstly, I love your videos and although there are one or two other teachers that I like on YOUTUBE, you have the absolute best tricks and tips for really ‘feeling’ what your body is and should be doing. I feel like my placement is really good b/c of your videos but I did have a question… I sing from about a G2 up to an A above middle C , my break into my mix seems to be in the Eb and F area. My question is : when I spend some time in my mix, singing songs like modern love (d.bowie) and american girl (t.petty) … is it normal to not be as comfortable afterwards in my chest register? Am I doing something wrong… is it a support/breathing problem ? thanks. Any advice would help. keep up the good work. If I had the money I’d be a student!
What is the most important thing for a singer to learn who is singing night after night and how does a singer doing night after night maintain his stamina? Thanks for your videos, they are some of the best out there.
One more! I’ve tried to get my ribs to expand for YEARS and have never been able to master it. They go out, but not much… Is there a way to experience that easily?
