Hey Paul.  Thanks for posting.  I have some huge and exciting plans for 2010.  I have just invested in some new high definition video and audio equipment which I am about to put to good use.  Lots of video lessons lined up and a free comprehensive beginners course is in the pipeline.  Great to meet you.

Hi Ian,

Great videos and tips btw. My name is Khoa Le. I produce, vocal arrange, write, and been in the music business for quite sometime. I'm was also a Julliard Student.

About 2 years ago, I started learning how to sing my own records so I didn't have to rely on reference singers to finish my records. I learned a lot through recording myself and understanding my own voice. After 8 years in the business, I never really tried recording myself until then.

I struggled a lot at first but overtime, it's gotten much better and I developed a vibrato for myself and I'm able to finally control it. Except when I do the “Eeees” as it's a bit harder.

Anyways, what I would love you to do for me Ian is to review 3 of my songs. They are done in different keys, but written differently for each so I wouldn't say the keys made a difference besides where I wanted to start off on when writing the original song.

I'm still trying to figure out a comfortable style for my voice and I wanted to know which song you thought I had a nice tone to. And on the song that I have a nice tone on, what I can do to make my tone even better and more natural sounding. I'm on pitch for everyone so no worries =)

Here are the titles to my song to this link on my website at http://www.kvibe.com.

1) “We'll get there soon”

2) “Lets Dance The Night”

3) “Fantasies Come True

I hope to hear your opinion. Thanks Ian

Hi Khoa,

I have listened to your songs and they are all of very professional quality.  Personally I like the first one “We'll get there soon”.  This ballad/R&B style really suits both your tone and range.  The falsetto moments are a nice contrasting touch.  I think you could possibly use a bit more edge to your voice in the verses.  An example where you have used more edge is “life we deserve”.  This can be effective at the start of a word to add more emotion to the phrase.  Hard to describe via text but i hope you get where I am coming from.  Really there isn't much to improve on.  There are a lot of popular singers who are no better than youself making a very good living from music.

Ian,

Thanks for your response =) I use your vocal warmups everyday in my car and my voice is getting much better. I recorded those records before seeing your techniques. And I'm in the process of recording a new record which I feel great about as well. Vocal techniques and everything else sounds better than these previous records. All these years in the business, but I never took warming up very seriously. Thanks again Ian.
